BRIEF ON EU FISH FOR DEVELOPMENT (FIDEP) PROJECT

BACKGROUND

The Fish for Development (FIDEP) Project is a 40-month-long Local Economic Development Project seeking to promote local sustainable economic growth and development through fish farming in the Adentan Municipality. It aims at alleviating poverty through the creation of employment for women, persons with disability (PWDs), youth and vulnerable groups along the fish value chain within the Adentan Municipality. A consortium of three partners is implementing the project: Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA), the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) and the Local Governance Network (LoGNet).

The overall objective of the project is to promote local sustainable economic growth and development through fish farming in the Adentan Municipality.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

  • Promote urban fish farming as a means of livelihood in the Adentan Municipality.
  • Provide the needed infrastructure and training along the entire value chain to promote the fish
  • industry.
  • Contribute to job creation for women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), youth and vulnerable
  • groups along the fish value chain within the Adentan municipality.
  • Contribute to preserving and protecting water bodies within the Adentan Municipality

PROJECT TARGET

  • 1200 youths, 600 women, 60 PWDs, and 360 men employed along the fish value chain within the Adentan municipality.
  • 22 water bodies protected and preserved within the Adentan Municipality.
  • Demonstration and processing centre, hatchery, nursery and cages constructed and operational by 2022
  • Expected annual farmer income of GHS 12,000 by 2022

EXPECTED RESULTS

The overall result of the project is sustained economic growth and development of the Adentan

Municipality.

The estimated results are:

  • Urban fish farming adopted as a means of livelihood in the Adentan Municipality.
  • Provision of needed infrastructure and training along the entire value chain to promote the fish industry.
  • 1200 Youths, 600 Women, 60 PWDs, and 360 Men employed along the fish value chain within the Adentan municipality.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • Construction of a demonstration centre
  • Construction of fish hatchery and nursery
  • Construction of fish cages
  • Construction of cottage-based processing centre
  • Skills training for farmers on the production of fingerling, emerging technologies, record keeping, pre-& post-harvest management and value-addition techniques.
  • Planting of trees around the water bodies
  • Formulation and enforcement of by-law.
