BRIEF ON EU ADENTAN WASTE TO WAGES (ADWAWA) PROJECT

BACKGROUND

The ADWAWA Project is a 4-year Circular Economy and Local Development Project funded by the European Union to promote the development of circular environmental management of municipal waste by reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic waste generated in the Adentan Municipality. The project promotes a circular economy for job creation for women, PWDs and youth through plastic waste management.

The project which is currently in its formative stage has provided a modern recycling centre for the recycling of plastic waste and for the construction of household items and fashion products. 

The project is partnering the Ghana Education Unit within the municipality in the implementation of all school actions. School Recycling Clubs and plastic waste management and jingle competitions have been held through inter school and inter circuit competitions. Segregation of plastic waste in schools and offices and public education have been embarked upon. The segregation processes have improved environmental management in the schools.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

  • The Overall objectives of the action is to contribute towards sustainable development through the development of a circular economy for job creation, a clean and healthier environment in 12 electoral areas of the Adentan Municipality (AdMA).
  • To promote the development of a circular environmental management of municipal waste by reducing, reusing, and recycling of at least 50% plastics waste generated in the Adentan Municipality.
  • To provide employment and income opportunities among youth, women, and persons with disabilities through innovative plastic waste recycling solutions.
  • To promote behavioural change and public participation in reusing and recycling of plastic waste through educational and awareness campaigns.

PROJECT TARGET

  • 300 women, 300 youth (15+35years), 50 persons with disabilities (PWDs), 150 men, 10,000 + school children and pupils.
  • 20 primary schools, 2 senior high school, 1 tertiary institution.
  • Churches, mosques, lorry stations (ie trotro and taxi), and bus terminals and markets.
  • Producers of plastic waste products, sachet water producers association, plastic bottle producing companies, Ghana plastic manufactures association.
  • Private waste management and recycling companies.
  • Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA) including the Municipal Office of Ghana Education Service and Environmental Health and Sanitation Department – EHSD).
  • Ministries of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Ministry of Education, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Universities and Media.

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Plastic waste collected reduced annually by 50% through recycling by 2024
  • 180 youths, 120 women, 20 PWDs, and 80 men engaged along the plastic value chain by 2024.
  • 300 litter bins placed and being used by residents in all the 12 electoral areas.
  • 3 survey (baseline, midline, and end line) undertaken to assess behavioural change in plastic waste disposal practices   by 2024.
  • Recycling centre and other ancillary facilities built and operational by 2024.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • Establishment of recycling demonstration
  • Provision of equipment such as waste shredders, plastic film washing and recycling machines and ancillary equipment.
  • Setting up of schools’ plastic waste segregation and collection points for reuse and recycle.
  • Provision of community garbage bins at vantage points for segregation of waste for recycling
  • Conduct surveys to determine the types and quantities of waste in selected areas and assess their potential for recycling or reuse.
  • Organise capacity building, skills training and development in reuse and recycling of plastic waste for products as well as skills training of local artisans in crafts and jewellery making from plastics for sale.
  • Advocate for a legislation on the development of a green economy.
  • Organize school plastic waste competition.
  • Recycling of plastic waste for construction, fashion and educational products.
  • Organise plastic waste recycle exhibition.
  • Undertake community arts and painting with recycle products.
  • Creating economic value for plastic waste collected by residents by paying for waste collected.
  • Connect communities to recycling companies.
  • Engage citizens for behavioural change and public participation in plastic waste disposal and conduct community outreach, public education and awareness campaigns.
  • Undertake school educational campaigns
  • Conduct performance audit of the recycling and behavioural change programmes in 12 electoral areas.
  • Undertake research, monitoring and evaluation of the project.
  • Organise mass volunteer clean-ups (involving local people and community groups).
