THE DISTRICT PROFILE

The Wa West District is one of the eleven districts that make up the Upper West Region created in 2004 by legislative instrument 1751.

LOCATION AND SIZE

The District is located in the western part of the Upper West Region, approximately between Longitudes 9º40’N and 10º10’N and also between latitudes 2º20W and 2º50’W. It shares borders to the south with Northern Region, North-West by Nadowli District, East by Wa Municipal and to the West by Burkina Faso.
The total area of the district is approximately 1,856 square km. This constitutes about 10 % of the region’s total land area, which is estimated at 18,478square km.

POPULATION

The 2010 National Population and Housing census results put the Wa West District population at 81,348. This constitutes about 11.57% of the Upper West Region’s total population of 702,110. (Source: GSS). This comprises of 40,227 males and 41,121 females. Using a growth rate of 1.9% per annum, the projected population for 2014 is 85,497comprising of 41,467 males and 44,030 females representing 48.50% and 51.50% respectively.
