DISTRICT PROFILE
Bawku West District was created in 1988 under the local government system of 1988 by Legislative Instrument (LI) 1442 with its capital at Zebilla.

LOCATION AND SIZE
It lies roughly between latitude 1° 30 N and 11° 10 N, and between longitude 0° 20E and °0 35E. The District covers an area of approximately 1,070 square kilometers, which constitute about 12% of the total land area of the Upper East Region. The District shares boundaries with Burkina Faso in the North, Binduri District to the East, Nabdam District to the West, East Mamprusi District to the South and Garu-Tempane District to the South East.

POPULATION SIZE
The estimated total population of the Bawku West Assembly was 94,034 according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census. This represents 9.0 percent of the region’s population.
