ASANTE AKIM SOUTH

DISTRICT PROFILE
The Asante Akim South District was carved out of the old Asante Akim District Council. The district is situated in the eastern part of the region and is the ‘gateway to Ashanti region’ from the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.

LOCATION AND SIZE
It covers a total surface area of about 1,153.3 square which forms about five percent (5%) of the total area of the Ashanti Region, and 0.5 percent of the total area of the country. 1t  shares  boundaries  with  the Asante  Akim  Central  Municipal  in  the  North,  Asante  Akim North  District  in  the  Northwest  and  the Bosome-Freho  District  in  the  southwest,  all  in Ashanti  Region.   Its  neighbours  on  the  eastern border that  coincides  with  the  boundary between the Ashanti and Eastern Regions are the Birim North, Akyeremansa, Kwahu West Districts and Kwahu South Municipal all in the Eastern Region.

The population of Asante Akim South District, according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, is 117,245 representing 2.5 percent of the region’s total population. Males constitute 49.4 percent and females represent 50.6 percent.   About eighty-three percent of the population is rural.
